Server Migration Blues

Ow ow ow ow ow!!!!

If one of my two readers is wondering why this sporadic blog was down for the last week and a half – you can blame it on my unending need to tinker and insatiable need for more power. To wit: I’ve been trying to run a Java application server on my current hosting plan, which, while excellent in many ways, choked and died on Java’s hording of memory. My old plan topped out at 512MB of RAM, and since MySQL and Apache and DNS were all already vying over the anemic amount of available memory, introducing Java to the mix was only asking for trouble. Most Java servers will tell you that 512MB is your memory requirement nadir, so it became painfully obvious to me that I was going to need an “upgrade”.

All your RAM are belong to me...

Over the last four weeks, I have been in the process of migrating my main web setup from one server to another. Even though this migration was happening from one account to another in the same hosting company, an “easy” server migration is about as common as getting struck by lighting and attacked by a shark at the same time… in a desert.  To add insult to injury, I was also switching hosting control panels – from Plesk to cPanel WHM (Web Host Manager).  I did this with the same confidence most horror movie characters exude when they enter the pitch black cave from which the munching noises are emanating while telling their friends “I just want to check it out – I’ll be right back!”.  Needless to say, I have yet again made a healthy snack for the Grue.

The server migration is over now, and like Dr McCoy after a trip through the transporter in the earliest Star Trek original series episodes, I’m looking around trying to discern if any body parts are missing.  So far, so good.  One good thing to come out of this – I’m going to have a lot to write about web hosting in general and cPanel and Plesk in particular.  Stay tuned…
